Japan has cleared the final local hurdle for restarting the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant, the world"s largest by capacity. The Niigata prefectural assembly voted today to support the governor"s approval, allowing Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to resume operations at the plant. This marks the first restart since the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
The decision by the Niigata assembly is a significant step in Japan"s efforts to revive its nuclear energy sector following the widespread shutdown of reactors after the Fukushima incident. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant has been offline since then, and the approval is expected to facilitate the resumption of operations.
