Volkswagen has halted vehicle production at its Dresden "Transparent Factory" (Gläserne Manufaktur), marking the first cessation of car manufacturing at a German site in the company"s 88-year history. The final ID.3 vehicle rolled off the production line today.
This decision comes amid ongoing cost-cutting measures and weak demand for vehicles. The Dresden facility will transition into an innovation campus that will focus on artificial intelligence, robotics, and microchips, in collaboration with TU Dresden (Dresden University of Technology).
As previously reported, the automotive industry has faced numerous challenges, including shifts in consumer preferences and economic pressures. Volkswagen"s move reflects broader trends affecting manufacturers globally.
