Sokoto was historically the site of the largest Fulani Caliphate, which emerged after the Fulanis abolished traditional Hausa Sunni monarchies. This caliphate established a Pan-Islamic entity and enslaved various peoples across the Gold Coast and the Gulf of Guinea. The British ultimately intervened, dismantling the caliphate by force.
